The Solar Panels economy surpassed that of conventional energy sources. The global levelised cost of kilowatt-hour electricity (LCOE) for PV power in 2023 falls to 0.04/kWh, 64% below coal-fired power stations (0.11/kWh), and module prices have fallen 89% since 2010 (from 2.5/W to 0.27/W). The cost of photovoltaic is estimated by Bloomberg New Energy Finance to be 0.01/kWh in 2030, further widening the cost advantage of coal-based power generation to 80%.
Continued technology advances will further expand efficiency limits. In 2023, perovskite-silicon laminated devices laboratory efficiency was 33.9% (theoretical limit 43%), and mass production efficiency of TOPCon devices was 22.8% (PERC was 21.3%). When the new components are placed in an experimental building in Tokyo, Japan, power generation per unit area becomes 41% more and annual revenue becomes ¥68,000 more. Backside gain for double-sided module (85% double-sided) is 30% in deserts, and the annual generation of power from a 500MW power station in Dubai becomes 1.2TWh (0.9TWh from single-sided components). NREL data show that the lifespan of photovoltaic systems has been extended from 25 years to 40 years and the decay rate has decreased from 0.5%/year to 0.3%/year.
Environmental benefits cannot be replaced. CO2 reduction of 1,000 tonnes per year per MW of photovoltaic power generation (820 tonnes /MWh of coal-fired power generation). China will add 87.4GW of new PV in 2022, equivalent to a reduction of 87.4 million tons of carbon emissions. Germany is powered by 46% renewable energy through Solar Panels, reducing CO₂ emissions by 120 million tons in 2023. After the release of Tesla Solar Roof in California, the carbon footprint of a single family was reduced by 14 tons per year (compared to 27 tons for traditional houses).
Policy and market two-wheel drive extension. Floating PV (1.5 hectares for each megawatt) saves 60% of land compared to surface power stations, and the 60MW Singapore Tenge Reservoir project generates 78GWh of electricity per year to power 16,000 houses. Agricultural photovoltaics (Agrivoltaics) In a French pilot test, the yield of wheat underneath photovoltaic panels was maintained at 85%, and the revenue from electricity generation was €1,200/ha/year. In the space photovoltaic (SSPS) technology demonstration, theoretical efficiency of the orbiting power station is 8 times greater than the ground system (not including atmospheric attenuation).
Energy storage synergistically enhances the resilience of the power grid. The Tesla Powerwall (13.5kWh) coupled with Solar Panels has reduced California home grid dependency from 70% to 8%. The South Australian Hornsdale energy storage facility (150MW/194MWh), combined with photovoltaic power stations, has increased grid stability by 90% and reduced frequency control costs by 36 million/year. In 2023, the optical storage system LCOS (levelized cost of energy storage) of the world fell to 0.08/kWh, 71% less than diesel power generation ($0.28/kWh).
